2024 has been an exciting year for decor. There seems to be more life, passion, and character in almost every aspect of decorating our homes. The mundane, beige color palettes of yesteryear are well and truly out, and the flare of interior decor is back.
But what are the best trends of 2024? The ones that are sure to carry on into 2025 and beyond? Below, we'll give you the 2024 interior decor trends that seem here to stay.
Bold is scary. Bold is daring. Bold intimidates people. But bold is here to stay.
Perhaps as a response to the “sad beige” trend that was so prevalent, or perhaps due to the fact that we’re all tired of the landlord special, if you have your own home, you’re likely to go bold or go home.
Yes, it's not as easy to style a home around bold colors - but that's only because we're used to simple tones with bold statement pieces. Now, bold is the entire room, known as color drenching. Navy blues, dark forest greens, browns, and deep oranges are taking center stage. And now we're coming up to the fall/autumn season; there has never been a better time to think about the bold color palette.
To be specific, rich browns, terracottas, ochres, and earthy tones are trending. We'd recommend a dark navy wall with gold, brass, or silver accessories - they look great. And try to make them meaningful accessories, like a sterling silver kiddush cup or a brass-colored picture that paints a thousand stories. Or, a dark forest green wall with white or brown accessories.
We're not trying to convince you to spend a fortune, but a lick of paint and new accessories won't break the bank.
We weren’t joking when we said “color drenching”. It’s a revolutionary new look that every style seems to love, and despite its nature, no one seems to say it is too much. So, what is color drenching? It’s exactly what you think: everything is the same color. The ceiling, the trimmings, the mouldings: they are all the same color. And we don’t even mean that everything is the same colour, but perhaps in different tones and shades. No, the same shade is applied to everything.
It gives the room a very bold identity but also offers some cosy aspects to the room. It offers a room a sophistication that cannot be rivalled. You can easily imagine drinking a finger of whiskey while sitting down with your favorite book in a leather chair in your colour-drenched room.
High gloss finishes were so in at one point, but 2024 says goodbye to them.
Textured finishes take center stage by leaning on using condensed layers and irregularized forms. More and more, Roman clay, lime wash, Venetian plaster, and furniture without regular edges are becoming so popular - we love the lime wash look.
The trend comes from a big demand for places with a homey feel and authenticity. The emphasis on texture breaks up any room is one we're loving. However, it’s also the first chapter of Home Decor 101 to vary textures to give multi-dimension to the space and not come off as dull.
Every era has something you can bring to your home. And if you want our advice, the best place to look is a thrift shop/charity store.
The secret is the difference, whether it is a mid-century modern couch with a heavily detailed Victorian mirror or contemporary chairs with a farmhouse table.
If anything, we'd say it's easier to design a home when you're mixing eras. There are no rules or guidebooks - the look is what you make it. The effect is that the feel of the space is contemporary yet very classic. And depending on the era you pick; you definitely can make your home look classy.
We also love that this trend won't break the bank. The bargains you can find in thrift shops/charity stores are incredible.
As mentioned, there was a surge in furniture from different eras in 2024, in particular, mid-century modern furniture really took off. An appreciation for retro and vintage looks in addition to an appreciation for the planet and less fast fashion meant that a lot of pieces were taken from the antique stores.
Have you noticed Instagram reels of gamer influencers playing Stardew Valley on their writing desk, complete with the hinged lid revealing their keyboard, rather than a typewriter? Or the abundance of display units that are repurposed as bar corners, complete with vintage crystal glasses?
There are even people who are using bureau vanity desks with the sliding lid combined with an Old Hollywood mirror and lights combo for the perfect place to get ready to go out!
It goes without saying that the rise in “Working from Home” has led to a rise in home offices and a tragic loss in guest bedrooms.
But have you noticed a few more ideas filling the home, to the point that a few spare rooms are getting used for multiple uses. For instance, the guest bedroom can have a daybed, with enough room for a large walk-in closet, a cosy home library corner, or a few pieces of equipment for a home gym.
There was even the rise of “listening rooms” trending this year, where music-minded folk would keep all their instruments, stereos, or simply a bean bag and a headset attached to your vinyl player so you can sit back, relax and enjoy your favourite albums in peace.
What's your favorite trend from 2024? Home decor feels easier with the new era of design. It's more playful and creative - no uniform styles on trend.
Finally, it feels like more passion and unique style is coming back to interior design. For a long time, it felt like everyone was copying the same design, and homes were losing their unique flare.
Let's hope the neutral color palette never returns!
